Love

In the early days of dating my future wife, she showed me a set of little copper string lights that she wanted to light her balcony with. I helped her set them up and they were magical. Of course, while working with these pretty little lights for the first time, I went straight to imagining what I could do with them. The copper wire string lights in particular had a warmth that just felt good!
I never forgot those lights, and years later I bought a set to use in a photo. I didn't have a specific idea, but with the lights in my hands I started weaving a heart, and the ideas started rolling in from there. 
The heart I made has 2 sets of lights woven together. At the bottom I glued a metal rod so I could stick the heart into sand.
It ended up being used for several images, where I would usually build little sets for each shot. One time I brought the lights into a lake and had it bobbing just above the water, with my tripod and myself almost completely submerged as well.
In this photograph, I'm perched up high at Juno Beach in Florida, at a spot where I knew I could overlook the ocean. Its the same spot where I shot the image Ocean Embrace. I decorated my "set" with local flowers and foliage and with my amazing wife next to me, I waited for the sun to set.

The image used to be called "Love on the Beach" but too often someone loving the image couldn't buy it for their mom or platonic friend because of the suggestive name. The new name is good too :)

Although there is some digital manipulation in this series, the unusual lighting and surreal quality in the Light Painting series is achieved by using colored lights during long exposures. They are not digital effects.
