Passage
A short behind-the-scenes video is available here.
“Passage” was created in the stunning 300-acre Lakes Park in Fort Myers, a lush haven filled with trails, lakes, gardens, wildlife... especially feathered friends, and the occasional alligator.
I found the location the day before while on a long walk. On the day of the shoot I arrived in the afternoon, set up and planned. The late afternoon gave me a beautiful sunset and I captured that. Then I waited for nightfall.
In the darkness, with my wife Nikki behind the camera, I ran through the park with two spotlights (one in each hand) and a powerful strobe slung over my shoulder, lighting the trees, bushes, and grass. I wanted the bridge to feel magnetic, to pull you in and compel you to cross it.
To create that feeling, I lit the far side a bit more richly, and made the bridge itself glow, forming a cozy, inviting path into the landscape.

Light Paintings series
I sometimes fantasize that with the snap of a finger, I can escape reality ... in a moment, be transported to a dream world free of life's demands, a child's playground where magic exists and all is right with the world. My Light Paintings are that portal. Through them I can transcend reality and escape into these beautiful, vibrant yet peaceful realms.

Although there is some digital manipulation in this series, the unusual lighting and surreal quality in the Light Painting series is achieved by using colored lights during long exposures. They are not digital effects.
