Mediterranean Paseo

Mediterranean Paseo

A short behind-the-scenes video is available here.

My mom grew up near Malaga, Spain, where Paseo was shot - more precisely, it was shot on the beautiful beaches of the Costa Del Sol. (My dad is from the north of Spain, Zaragoza).
When my parents retired, they bought a little home a block from the beach, and this became their utopia. After years of struggling as poor immigrants, they had finally found peace.

Every day they go for a walk along the boardwalk by the ocean - el Paseo Maritimo - where they seem to have hundreds of friends and where you could stare at the ocean for hours. When they first moved back to Spain, my parents woke up before dawn and walked down to the ocean to see the sunrise. This became a regular thing for them, having to pinch themselves that this was truly their new life.
My dad was with me when I shot Paseo. It was the first and only time he has ever seen me light a scene during a long exposure. And he was stunned, finally understanding how I create my images.

Light Paintings series

I sometimes fantasize that with the snap of a finger, I can escape reality ... in a moment, be transported to a dream world free of life's demands, a child's playground where magic exists and all is right with the world. My Light Paintings are that portal. Through them I can transcend reality and escape into these beautiful, vibrant yet peaceful realms.

Although there is some digital manipulation in this series, the unusual lighting and surreal quality in the Light Painting series is achieved by using colored lights during long exposures. They are not digital effects.
