I’m going shooting tonight with aspiring photographer Tatjana. Last year she introduced me to Mare Island, the oldest Naval shipyard in the West, built in 1854. Its a small island, just a few square miles, but contains many old and abandoned factories. At night, it becomes a very bizarre ghost town. During WWI, and especially during WWII, a massive warship-building complex was created, producing hundreds of vessals, and overhauling thousands more. The base was decommissioned in 1996, leaving behind this strange landscape. Developers are going through it now, but most of it is frozen in time.
This is Mare Island at night, another Bay Area shot that is almost complete.
