Raoul bailed on me at the last minute last night. It happens occasionally – not often. There’s one city where the stats are reversed: Los Angeles. Four out of five times in L.A., after confirming they will go shooting with me, in the end the person will not show up. This was jarring when I […]

Seattle

I’m going shooting tonight… I met a guy, Raoul, who’ll be watching my back. A friend of his, a graff artist, may come too. Seattle has many great locations to shoot. I was here last year and stumbled upon a vast old industrial area that ran for miles. I shot this at the time:
Alleys & Fire […]

My stupid-ass digital camera

I got back home this morning… drove all day and night from Denver, with Pam sharing the driving… Now I have today and part of tomorrow to do everything I can’t do on the road.
I fly to Des Moines tomorrow at midnight (with an armful of artwork) to get my van and drive to Chicago for the […]

No, No, No! Yes, Yes, Yes!

What a fantastic show Cherry Creek is… my best show ever.
I went shooting last night in Denver. I had planned to go Friday and Saturday but I was too wiped out, so Sunday night I dragged my sorry ass into the night air, determined to find something. A double espresso brought me back to life.
I […]

Truck Stop

Onward and onward… I’m sitting at the airport in Des Moines with 30 minutes to spare, waiting for my plane to take me back to California. After the show in Milwaukee I went out shooting with a young, local photographer, Mark Adgate. I’m thrilled about the one shot we did! It will be on-line in a few […]

Trimming the fat, and bringing home the bacon
June 21st, 2008 · 2 Comments
I just got back from shooting in Milwaukee and I found an image I’m excited about. It was a brand of image you have to be very disciplined with… One where you have to strip all the excess, and get to the core of the image. Its often tempting to pull back because there’s more to […]

Shooting alone
June 20th, 2008 · No Comments
I got some excellent leads for places to shoot tonight in Milwaukee. I didn’t find anyone to shoot with so I’ll go out alone. I have to be twice as careful, at least in theory, when I shoot alone at night. If I find a neighborhood with a lot of potential, I’ll park the van […]

Batman and Agfa-robin

This is one of the last shots I ever did with my all-time favorite film: Agfa Ultra. Of course it died from neglect. Actually the whole company died… it went bankrupt several years ago… one more victim of the digital tidal wave. I had heard rumors of the film’s demise, but the company’s techies told me […]

Purge on!!

I love this blog. It gives me the opportunity to show images that have been stuck in limbo for ages.
Here’s another sad sack shot. Does it want to be more than it is? Is it more than it appears? Does it know I’m talking about it?
It was shot in an unusually narrow alley in Chinatown, […]

Updated web site
June 3rd, 2008 · No Comments
I’ve updated the Alley slide show - it now has several of my recent images. I’ve also added stories to some of my older images, including NOW (below). And I’ve re-ordered the images: newest first, down to the oldest. The oldest, incidentally, is Alley no. 1, shot in 1991.
Alleys & Fire Escapes, no. 97
NOW (2007, Los Angeles, CA, 1:30am)
