Artexpo New York is over, and it was a huge success for me, so I’m very happy.
I went out last night to a very good Belgian restaurant, Markt, with the wack Irish rapper and with an old artist friend, who’s stenciling the city like a madman.
Stenciling is a form of graffiti. A design is cut out of a piece of cardboard, which you lay against a wall and spray paint over. A brilliant artist in England, Bansky, has become famous in the art world through his vast stencil work.
My friend, who wants to remain anonymous, is going by the street name ClarkClark. I’ve known him for years, and he’s just moved to NY. Much of his previous art was performance based. He once sat in an old-fashioned bathtub filled with black coffee, in the center of a gallery. He didn’t sleep for 3 days prior, so at the performance, he just slept for hours in the tub while gallery goers poked at him.
This is his current full time job: He goes out from midnight to 4am, 5 days a week with a variety of stencils. All are the same image, but in different sizes – see the photo. He produces 100 images a night, while dodging the police. He’s been arrested twice so far, but he keeps going out. He’s also stenciled most of his clothes. I’ve never seen him so excited. Before dinner, we went on a little tour of his work, and I snapped this photo.
